Atlante is part of the Italian Navy’s logistic support ship program, which is designed to ensure resupply at sea, operational support and logistical endurance for maritime forces during long-term missions. The contract for the construction of the second LSS ship was awarded in December 2021 to the Italian RTI consortium, led by Fincantieri, with an estimated value of 410 million euros.

Atlante’s industrial schedule followed the main planned milestones: the first steel-cutting ceremony took place on 20 July 2022, the keel stretching was carried out on 28 June 2023, and the launch took place on 18 May 2024. The ship then began sea trials on 25 March 2025, the last phase before the official delivery to the Navy.
The LSS program started with the flagship Vulcano (A 5335), which was delivered to the Italian Navy in March 2021 and is already in operational service. Like Vulcano, Atlante has a total displacement of over 27,000 tons and a length of 193 meters, making it one of the largest and most capable logistics support platforms in the Italian fleet.

With the phasing in of Atlante, the Italian Navy significantly strengthens its ability for maritime power projection and logistical support, and increases the squadrons’ autonomy during operations in the Mediterranean and in internationally strategically important areas.
