China fires rockets on second day of military exercises around Taiwan

The dispute between China and Taiwan began in 1949, after the end of the Chinese Civil War, won by Mao Zedong on the mainland. The nationalist forces, defeated by the communists, took refuge on the island of Taiwan and established a separate government there. Since then, Beijing has considered Taiwan a rebel province, part of Chinese territory. Currently, the island is governed autonomously and democratically.
