China announced this Monday (22) that it will implement temporary tariffs on some dairy products imported from the European Union (EU), a measure that increases trade tension with the bloc. ✅ Follow the g1 international news channel on WhatsApp According to a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the so-called “provisional tariffs” vary between 21.9% and 42.7% and come into force this Tuesday (23). The measure affects a range of products, including fresh and processed cheeses, blue cheese and some types of milk and cream originating in the European Union. See the videos that are trending on g1 Chinese authorities began an investigation into possible subsidies for European products in August 2024, following a request from the Chinese Dairy Association. The process should be completed in February. According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, preliminary findings indicate a link between EU subsidies and “substantial damage” to the Chinese dairy industry. The announcement comes just days after Beijing adopted anti-dumping tariffs on pork imports from the European Union for a period of five years. These tariffs came into effect on December 17 and range between 4.9% and 19.8%, a percentage lower than the temporary rates of 15.6% to 62.4% that have been in effect since September.
