Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) undergoes surgery to repair two inguinal hernias, this Thursday (25). The procedure began around 9 am and should last between three and four hours.
Bolsonaro was admitted to DF Star Hospital on Wednesday (24) to undergo pre-operative exams, which included cardiological and surgical risk assessment, and was considered fit for the procedure.
As determined by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), the former president’s room will be monitored by two PF agents, 24 hours a day, during the period of hospitalization. Security teams must also be on standby inside and outside the hospital unit.
Understand the surgery
- Inguinal hernias, like Bolsonaro’s, occur when a part of the intestine or other internal tissue “escapes” through a weakened point in the abdominal muscles, forming a lump or swelling that can cause pain and discomfort.
- The procedure occurs to reposition tissue that has protruded outside the abdominal wall.
- In Bolsonaro’s case, the bulge was identified in the groin. The surgery can be performed via laparoscopy or with a cut for correction.
- In all cases, general anesthesia is required. Doctors must place a type of mesh made of synthetic material to heal the opening. The barrier created will prevent hernias from coming back.
