Australia pays tribute to attack victims

by Marcelo Moreira

This Sunday (21), the terrorist attack that killed 15 people in Australia completed a week. It was the worst attack in the country in three decades. A vigil with speeches, musical performances and moments of prayer took place at the site of the massacre: Bondai Beach, in Sydney. Thousands of people were present. At 6:47 pm local time, the crowd observed a minute of silence. That was the time when the extremists opened fire.

Survivors, politicians, rescuers and members of the Jewish community participated in the ceremony. The attack was classified as anti-Semitic, as the attack targeted Jews who were celebrating the beginning of a holiday. Security was reinforced, including the presence of elite snipers.

Tributes also arrived at one of Australia’s main tourist attractions. A projection of a candle graced the Sydney Opera House at night.
