US embassy criticizes Bolsonaro’s arrest

by Marcelo Moreira

The United States embassy in Brazil, in a statement shared on social media this Saturday (22), criticized the preventive detention of former president Jair Messias Bolsonaro and stated that minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), exposed the Court “to shame and international discredit”.

“Judge Moraes, a sanctioned human rights violator, has exposed Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court to shame and international discredit by disregarding traditional norms of judicial self-restraint and blatantly politicizing the judicial process. The United States is deeply concerned about his most recent attack on the rule of law and political stability in Brazil: the provocative and unnecessary arrest of former President Bolsonaro, who was already under house arrest under heavy surveillance and with strict communication restrictions,” said the embassy, republishing the statement from US Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau.

“There is nothing more dangerous for democracy than a judge who does not recognize limits to his power”, completes the publication made in X.

Last Saturday, Jair Bolsonaro was preventively arrested by the Federal Police (PF) as ordered by Moraes and taken to the Federal Police Superintendence in Brasília at around 6:35 am.

This is not the beginning of the sentence for a coup d’état. The alleged reason for the arrest was the “guarantee of public order” due to the organization of a vigil called to take place near the condominium where Bolsonaro lives.

Based on the alleged attempt to violate the ankle bracelet, the minister argued that there was an intention to break the equipment to “guarantee success in his escape, facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son”.

He suggested that Bolsonaro would try to take refuge in the United States embassy, located about 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro’s condominium, a 15-minute drive away.

Trump criticized prison

When asked about Bolsonaro, arrested this Saturday morning, American President Donald Trump declared that he was not aware of the arrest, but classified it as “very bad” after journalists present confirmed to him that the former president had been taken to the Federal Police.

The Republican also detailed that he will meet “soon” with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
