The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said this Saturday (22) that the preventive detention of former president and political ally Jair Bolsonaro is “very bad”. Still according to Trump, he will meet “soon” with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“I spoke last night with the gentleman you just mentioned and we will meet, I believe, in the near future,” Trump said when asked by journalists outside the White House about Lula, according to the EFE agency.

When asked about Bolsonaro, arrested this Saturday morning, Trump declared that he was not aware of the arrest, but classified it as “very bad” after the journalists present confirmed to him that the former president had been taken to the Federal Police.

Last Thursday, the American president signed an executive order removing 40% tariffs on some products from Brazil, such as beef, coffee, cocoa and aviation components.

Trump had imposed, in April, a 10% tariff on Brazilian exports, on top of which he later imposed another surcharge of 40% — bringing the total to 50% — in a move that was seen as a way of disapproving the judicial persecution of the right in Brazil.

The signing of the order took place after Trump and Lula had a cordial meeting in Malaysia at the end of October.
