The United Kingdom government denounced this Wednesday (19) the proximity of a Russian spy ship to its maritime space and said it has “military options” ready to respond if necessary. In a statement, UK Defense Minister John Healey stated that the Yantar ship is collecting information on British infrastructure and said he “knows what Russia is doing”. He also reported a laser incident, which increased tensions between the parties. “A Russian spy ship, the Yantar, is off the edge of British waters in the north of Scotland, after entering the wider UK maritime space in recent weeks. This is a ship with the function of collecting information and mapping submarine cables. We assigned a royal frigate and planes to monitor and track its every move, and at that moment the Yantar pointed lasers at our pilots,” Healey said. “This Russian action is extremely dangerous and it is the second time this year that the Yantar has been sent to British waters. My message to Russia and Putin is this: we see you, we know what you are doing, and if the Yantar travels south this week, we are ready,” added the minister. The Russian government did not publicly comment on Healey’s announcement until the last update of this report. This report is being updated.
