The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said this Friday (21) that he will talk to the dictator of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, in the “not too distant future”.
The statements were made in an interview with political commentator Brian Kilmeade, from Fox News. The Republican avoided giving details about the issues he intends to discuss with the Chavista leader.
However, the hypothesis of dialogue arises amid increased tensions in the Caribbean, where the United States maintains a broad military mobilization, including the largest aircraft carrier in the world, the USS Gerald Ford, which arrived in the region this week.
Trump had already signaled in recent days that he is willing to talk directly with Maduro, who has also shown a willingness to talk to Washington.
The American president told Fox that he has “something very specific” to talk to the Chavista dictator.
Despite the lack of details about what the two leaders will talk about, the United States has increased pressure on Venezuela.
Last Sunday, the United States Department of State announced that it will designate the Cartel de los Soles, which the American government links to Maduro, as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO) from the 24th.
Furthermore, the New York Times revealed this week that Trump authorized new secret actions to overthrow Venezuela’s dictatorial regime.
