The regimes of Russia and North Korea signed a media cooperation agreement on Tuesday (11) aimed at exchanging information and carrying out joint broadcasts between their state vehicles, according to the agencies. EFE e AFP. The pact, signed in Moscow and Pyongyang, consolidates the rapprochement between the two countries amid the growing military partnership during the war in Ukraine.
According to the Russian embassy in Pyongyang, the document was signed by the Russian Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Media and the North Korean Information Committee. The text provides for the exchange of content between public and private media, in addition to the creation of joint projects in cultural, economic and political areas.
As highlighted by the portal NK Newsthe main agreement was signed between the Russian state group Russia Segodnya – which controls vehicles like RIA Novosti, Sputnik e RT – and the official North Korean agency KCNA. The parties pledged to promote “objective and professional coverage” of bilateral relations and to reinforce “informational cooperation” between Moscow and Pyongyang.
O NK News also reported that the Russian delegation, headed by the deputy editor-in-chief of Russia SegodnyaSergei Kochetkov, met with KCNA Deputy Director Pak Kang Ho in the North Korean capital. The meeting took place while another parallel agreement was signed in Moscow between the Russian ministry and Pyongyang’s Information Committee, expanding cooperation in information and communications technology.
The initiatives point to an attempt by the regimes of Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un to align their narratives around the war in Ukraine and other issues of interest to both countries. According to the NK Newsa Russia Segodnya has been the target of international sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union for acting as an instrument of disinformation for the Kremlin. The company and its director, Margarita Simonyan, have been under restrictions since last year for disseminating pro-Kremlin content on several continents.
According to the agencies EFE e AFPthe agreement is part of the policy of “patriotic journalism” defended by Putin, who throughout the war in Ukraine eliminated the independent press and consolidated state control over information. North Korea, in turn, uses KCNA as an exclusive organ for internal propaganda and international communication, promoting the image of Kim Jong-un’s regime.
