Last Monday (10), the Federal Supreme Court (STF) overturned the São Paulo state law that gave São Paulo municipalities the power to prohibit or regulate the motorcycle taxi service.
To work as a motorcycle taxi driver you must:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Have a category “A” license for at least two years
- Pass a specialized course
- Wear a safety vest with retro-reflective stripes
- Protective device for legs and engine, fixed to the vehicle structure
- Thread trimmer installed on the handlebar
- Rear and side metal handles for transporting passengers
According to IBGE data, the motorcycle taxi service is offered by 2,925 of the 5,570 Brazilian municipalities. The modality is present in all Brazilian states, being the third most popular means of transport in the country.
The decision ends discussions between the city of São Paulo and one of the companies that offers the service, 99. In recent months, the parties have had legal disputes regarding the release or prohibition of the means of transport.
