Mauro Vieira and Marco Rubio are expected to meet this Thursday (12) in Washington to discuss pricing

Chancellor Mauro Vieira and the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, have a meeting scheduled this Thursday (13), in Washington, to discuss the impasse generated by the so-called “tariff” — the package of increased import tariffs applied by Brazil on products from the United States, which has been increasing trade tension between the two countries.

The meeting was confirmed by parliamentarians close to Rubio and takes place one day after a brief conversation between authorities during the G7 meeting in Niagara, Canada. On the occasion, Vieira presented the negotiations conducted by technical teams and detailed the proposal sent by Brasília on November 4, which seeks a negotiated solution before the conflict worsens.

Since the announcement of the new tariffs in October, the Brazilian government has pressured Washington to reconsider some of the measures, arguing that they affect strategic sectors and disrespect commitments made at the World Trade Organization (WTO). The White House, on the other hand, maintains that the policy is legitimate and necessary to protect American industry.

Brazilian diplomatic sources estimate that this Thursday’s meeting could open space for a temporary agreement, with the partial suspension of tariffs while negotiations between technical teams continue. The expectation is that direct dialogue between Vieira and Rubio will reduce the climate of tension and allow progress towards a broader understanding in the coming weeks.
