Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, winner of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, asked this Wednesday (12) for population unity and international support to guarantee a peaceful transition in Venezuela, stating that the country is currently experiencing “the last hours” of the Nicolás Maduro regime.
As reported by the agency EFE and the broadcaster CNN Chileduring a forum of the IDEA Group – which brings together former Ibero-American presidents – held at Miami Dade College, Machado stated that the Venezuelan crisis is going through “decisive hours” and that the moment represents “a turning point for all of Latin America”.
“I ask you to accompany us in this historic moment, in these decisive hours, because what is happening in Venezuela is not just a national fact, it is a turning point for the entire region,” he declared, as reported by EFE.
The opponent highlighted that the country is “on the threshold of freedom” and guaranteed that the transition of power will be “orderly, peaceful and irreversible”.
“We know that this time we will succeed, because when a people decides to be free there is no force on Earth capable of stopping them”, he stated. Machado also said that the objective is to transform Venezuela “into the Latin American miracle of the 21st century”.
According to CNN Chilethe opposition leader pointed out that the “end of Chavismo is imminent” and attributed the new political phase to “international pressure, internal wear and tear and regional support”. In an interview with the Chilean newspaper The Mercuryshe stated that she felt that “Venezuela is reaching the final hours of the regime” and confirmed that she had been in direct contact with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to discuss “the need for a firm articulation of the international community in favor of an institutional transition and free elections”.
In recent days, Maduro accused the Venezuelan opposition of “feeding the threats of the North American empire” and activated the so-called “Commands for Defense”, stating that, if necessary, “the fight will be armed”. US military forces are currently carrying out exercises near Venezuelan territory, where they are also fighting drug traffickers.
