by Marcelo Moreira

This Thursday (13), in Washington, a summit was held between Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and the Secretary of the US State Department, Marco Rubio. The main topic of the meeting was the 50% tariffs imposed on Brazil. The meeting lasted about 10 minutes, and details were not disclosed.

It was the third time that Mauro Vieira met Rubio in the American capital. According to the chancellor, the meeting was positive and demonstrates the US government’s interest in quickly resolving the issue. He added that the Americans are evaluating the proposal presented by Brazil last week and that a response should be given in the coming days.

Rubio was appointed by former President Donald Trump to negotiate a new trade agreement with Brazil, following Trump’s meeting with Lula in Malaysia. This Thursday’s meeting took place at the State Department headquarters, but Mauro Vieira did not reveal details of the plan presented.

Before the meeting, the White House announced new trade agreements with Guatemala, El Salvador, Ecuador and Argentina. The government of Argentine President Javier Milei, for example, will give priority to the United States in several sectors, including medicines, machinery and agricultural products.
