Croatia has taken a decisive step in its military modernization by approving the acquisition of 44 main battle tanks Leopard 2A8, currently the most advanced model in the Leopard family.

The decision was confirmed on October 30, when the Croatian Parliament’s Defense Committee approved four new weapons programs, totaling €1.9 billion in investments.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Ivan Anušić, who shared the information via LinkedIn, the package includes not only the 44 Leopard 2A8 tanks but also 18 CAESAR Mk2 wheeled howitzers, 420 heavy off-road Tatra tactical trucks, and a national counter-drone defense system.

First Leopard 2A8 Already Presented

On November 19, KNDS Germany — the manufacturer of the Leopard 2A8 — publicly presented the first unit of the new series during an international defense industry event. The demonstration included Croatian representatives from the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces, highlighting the progress of negotiations and Zagreb’s commitment to the new program.

€1.3 Billion Package Includes Tanks, Simulators, and Logistical Support

According to specialized publication ESUT, the contract for the 44 Leopard 2A8 tanks is valued at approximately €1.3 billion. This amount covers not only the vehicles but also training simulators, spare parts, maintenance kits, and full logistical support.
Deliveries are scheduled between 2028 and 2030, enhancing Croatia’s military capabilities during a period in which the country seeks to replace tanks previously provided to Ukraine.

Croatian Industry to Participate Directly in the Program

The agreement also foresees the integration of Croatian companies in the assembly and maintenance of the new armored vehicles. Among the companies involved are Končar and Đuro Đaković, contributing both to component production and support throughout the vehicles’ lifecycle.
Additionally, the package includes full crew training and technical support for up to 15 years, including maintenance of strategic component stockpiles.

Funding Supported by European Programs

Croatia’s fleet modernization will be financed both through the national budget and European funds aimed at strengthening collective defense. This reinforces the country’s integration with strategic EU and NATO initiatives.

With the arrival of the new Leopard 2A8 tanks, Zagreb will make a significant leap in its land defense capabilities, aligning with the highest technological standards currently adopted by European armies.
