Colombian President Gustavo Petro ordered on Tuesday (11) the suspension of information sharing with American security agencies until the United States ceases attacks on boats in Caribbean and Pacific waters.
“An order is given to all levels of public force intelligence to suspend the sending of communications and other dealings with American security agencies,” Petro wrote in X.
The president claimed that “the measure will be maintained as long as the United States continues missile attacks on speedboats in the Caribbean.”
“The fight against drugs must be subordinated to the human rights of the Caribbean people”, added the Colombian.
In recent months, Petro has turned against American President Donald Trump on several occasions, accusing him of committing “assassinations” and “war crimes” in his military campaign against drugs, first in the Caribbean and then in the Pacific, where two dozen attacks and more than 70 deaths of people considered drug traffickers by the United States have been recorded since September.
These episodes deepened the growing friction between Washington, Colombia and the Venezuelan regime, whose leaders – Petro and Nicolás Maduro – are accused by Trump of promoting drug trafficking.
Petro’s announcement was made after the United Kingdom’s decision to stop sharing intelligence information with the United States about vessels suspected of drug trafficking in the Caribbean, so as not to be an “accomplice” in American attacks, according to the news. CNN.
For years, the United Kingdom – which controls territories in the Caribbean where it maintains intelligence bases – had helped the United States locate vessels suspected of transporting drugs so that the American Coast Guard could intercept them, sources told the American broadcaster.
The UK’s decision represents a significant break with one of its closest allies and important partner in intelligence exchange.
