Chile could make an unprecedented deal by providing 30 Marder 1A3 armored vehicles to Germany through a “circular exchange” mechanism, according to a report by El Mostrador and an organization that monitors military aid deliveries to Ukraine.

The hope is that the vehicle will ultimately strengthen Ukrainian forces, while Santiago will gain access to the modern air defense systems offered by Berlin.

Germany has delivered 140 Marder 1A3s to Kiev and pledged to deliver an additional 25, and the addition of vehicles from Chile will further expand that commitment. However, this operation raises questions about whether this is the fulfillment of a long-standing promise — the delivery of which was delayed by more than four months — or a new package that has not yet been officially announced.

The “circular exchange” model has been used by several European countries to support Ukraine, receiving compensation from Germany in the form of arms or funding. If the deal is confirmed, it would be the first participation of a Latin American country in this form of cooperation, marking an important diplomatic step in the context of international support for Kiev.
