The Federal Oral Criminal Court (Tof 2) of Argentina ordered on Tuesday (18) the seizure of assets belonging to former president Cristina Kirchner and others involved in the case Roadsopened in 2019 to investigate acts of corruption by the then left-wing government linked to public works.
With the decision, according to the Argentine press, the Kirchner-Fernández family will lose a total of 20 properties, one registered in the name of the former president and 19 inherited by her children, Máximo and Florencia Kirchner. The court decision also ordered the registration of the sentence in the corresponding Property Registry Offices to block the assets until the sentence becomes final.
The court justified the measure by considering that the funds and assets subject to seizure constitute “proceeds of crime” and that their recovery is necessary to repair the damage caused to the State. In total, the amount should cover 685 billion Argentine pesos.
The Criminal Execution Court decided that the nine convicted in the Vialidad case must respond with their respective assets, “jointly, up to the exact amount of 684,990,350,139.86 pesos.” Sources consulted by the newspaper Clarion reported that the Argentine court is evaluating a second stage, which may involve more of the defendants’ assets.
The road works case went to trial in 2019 and resulted in Cristina Kirchner’s conviction in December 2022 for corruption, a sentence that was confirmed on June 17 by the Argentine Supreme Court.
The former Argentine president is serving her sentence under house arrest in the Recoleta neighborhood, in Buenos Aires, and remains permanently barred from holding public office.
