White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said this Thursday (23) that she sees no signs from the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, to “de-escalate” tensions with the United States and called him “unbalanced”.
At a press conference, Leavitt was asked by a journalist if she saw the possibility of de-escalation after the recent exchanges of barbs between Petro and American President Donald Trump.
“I don’t think we’re seeing a de-escalation from Colombia’s unbalanced leader right now, and I don’t think the president [Trump]frankly, be interested in that at this point. He spoke about this yesterday and I have nothing to add to his comments”, replied the spokeswoman, speaking with an ironic smile on her lips.
On Wednesday (22), Trump confirmed that he had suspended all financial aid to Colombia, as he had announced he would do last weekend, called Petro a “thug” and “bad guy” and said that the Colombian president “is manufacturing a lot of drugs”.
Over the weekend, the American president had already called Petro a “drug dealer”, after the Colombian president criticized the American military operation in the Caribbean Sea that targets vessels that allegedly transport drugs.
This Thursday, the United States government announced the ninth bombing of the operation, the second that targeted a boat in the Pacific Ocean.
Petro spoke in an interview on Monday (20) that one of the solutions for “humanity” could be to “remove Trump” from power and yesterday he stated that he will sue the American president due to the accusations made against him.
Today, the Colombian president once again provoked Trump, saying at a press conference in Bogotá that the United States is committing “extrajudicial executions” in the military operation.
