Mauro Vieira speaks after meeting with Marco Rubio: Lula and Trump should meet soon The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, stated this Thursday (16) that he had a “very productive conversation” with the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. The United States’ 50% tariff on Brazilian products was one of the main issues, according to the minister. The two were together earlier, for around 1:15 am, at the White House. For most of the conversation, advisors were present. But, for 20 minutes, Vieira and Rubio were alone. The meeting between Rubio and Vieira takes place the week after the phone call between President Lula and President Donald Trump. This Thursday’s meeting is seen as another stage in the easing of relations between the two governments. According to Vieira, “a constructive attitude prevailed” at the meeting, marked by a tone of cooperation and mutual respect. “I held a great meeting here with the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. This meeting began with a bilateral meeting alone, which lasted about 20 minutes — private and very productive —, followed by a broader meeting, in which members of the team of the White House trade representative, the State Department and the Brazilian Embassy participated,” Vieira told the press, already back at the Brazilian embassy in Washington. Vieira also said that the conversation with Rubio marks the beginning of “an auspicious process” to reverse the tariff. “This was an auspicious beginning of a negotiating process in which we will work to normalize and open new paths for bilateral relations. I reiterated the Brazilian position, transmitted directly by President Lula to President Trump last week, on the need to reverse the measures adopted by the North American government since July”, reported the Brazilian chancellor.
