Brazilian woman is target of xenophobic attack in Ireland A xenophobic attack in broad daylight, in the middle of the street for anyone who wants to listen: the situation, recorded on video (see above), was experienced by Brazilian Lays Mendes this Thursday (23), in Dublin, capital of Ireland. “You are murderers, you have to go back to your country. We want you out of Ireland. You kill our children, we don’t want you. You are hateful”, shouts an Irish woman when confronted, even though she knew everything was being recorded. A resident of the city for eight years, where she runs a beauty salon, Lays told g1 that she has been the target of constant attacks by the woman who appears in the images since July. Almost daily, the elderly woman passes by her establishment to offend her. After the first episode, the Brazilian went to the Irish police, but the response given by the authorities was that nothing could be done. “I went to the police, told them what had happened, provided clarification and sent the video. But they said there was nothing they could do. There is no law that protects us here. If someone comes by and verbally offends me, they just get a warning: ‘Look, you can’t do that’. The person can continue to be xenophobic and racist”, she laments. I’m at my place of work and she keeps passing by and offending me, attacking me verbally. It’s a step towards her physically attacking me… If it were the other way around, I wouldn’t have this justification. I’m afraid, right? My concern isn’t just today. It’s thinking about the future, my family, my friends… What protection do we have when we come and go?”, he asks.
