The United States government, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, will send a contingent of 200 military personnel to the Middle East to oversee the ceasefire between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas, according to American officials and newspaper reports. The Times of Israel and the EFE agency. The measure is part of the implementation of the first phase of the peace agreement mediated by Washington, approved by the Israeli security cabinet this Thursday (9).

According to a senior official cited by the The Times of IsraelAdmiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command (CENTCOM), the group “will initially have 200 people on the ground. Their role will be to supervise, observe and ensure there are no violations.” According to the same source, military officers from Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye and possibly the United Arab Emirates will be incorporated into the American team to form a multinational monitoring mission.

A second official clarified that “no American soldiers should enter the Gaza Strip.” Sources close to the US government informed the The Times of Israel that the American military will be based mainly in Egypt, where a joint coordination center with international and Israeli forces will be created in order to avoid incidents or clashes during the gradual withdrawal of troops.

The agency EFE added that the American military will act in humanitarian and supervisory tasks, establishing a “civil-military coordination center” in Israeli and Palestinian areas. Admiral Cooper will be responsible for ensuring compliance with security protocols and observing the behavior of local forces.

“The security plan has been practiced for months and will be shared with the Israeli authorities,” military sources told EFE.

The agreement between Israel and Hamas for the release of hostages and ceasefire, announced this Wednesday (8) after international mediation, provides for the release of all those kidnapped in exchange for the partial withdrawal of Israeli troops in Gaza.

The Israeli cabinet approved the peace plan in a vote considered historic, after two years of intense war against Hamas. According to sources heard by CNNthe ceasefire must come into force immediately, marking the beginning of the most delicate phase of the US-led pacification process.
