US issues travel warning after mega operation in Brazil

The American State Department has issued a warning to its citizens who are in Brazil due to the mega police operation that has already left at least 64 dead and 81 arrested on Tuesday (28), in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro, and which has become the most lethal action in the state’s history.

Through a statement, the American government advised its citizens to be aware of the situation and avoid the region where the violent events are taking place.

“North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: constant conflicts between the police and criminal factions have caused traffic disruptions in several areas. The situation is evolving quickly, so keep an eye on the news and map apps on your cell phone for updates. Be cautious when traveling through the city and avoid heavily affected areas, as far as possible,” says the official note.

The mega police operation against the Red Command (CV) gained prominence in the international press the day before. Some publications abroad described the clashes between police and criminals as “war scenes”.

Four police officers died during the action, which involved more than 2,500 officers on the streets of Rio de Janeiro. In response to the offensive, criminals threw bombs at police officers and blocked important roads in the city using burnt-out vehicles.
