The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said, during a meeting with the head of the Brazilian Executive, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), that he intends to visit Brazil and that he “immensely” likes the country and the Brazilian people, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira. According to the chancellor, the American also said he admired Lula’s career.
“President Trump declared that he admires the profile of President Lula’s political career, having already been president of the Republic twice, having been persecuted in Brazil and having recovered, proven his innocence, and returned to present himself and victoriously won his third term”, said the Brazilian chancellor to journalists.
“They even established that there will be reciprocal visits. President Trump wants to come to Brazil, and President Lula also accepted, he said that he will go to the United States with pleasure in the future. President Trump said that he admires Brazil, that he immensely likes Brazil and the Brazilian people and, therefore, the final conclusion is that the meeting was very positive”, he added.
Still according to the minister’s report, the conversation between the two heads of state was “very relaxed, even joyful”.
“The presidents dealt with all matters. President Lula began by saying that there was no prohibited subject and renewed the Brazilian request to suspend tariffs imposed on Brazilian exports during the negotiation period, in the same way as the recourse to the Magnitsky Law, and said that he was willing to talk. The final balance is great.”
Lula and Trump met in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, from 3:30 pm local time (4:30 am in Brasília), on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Leaders’ Summit.
Before the closed-door conversation, both spoke to the Brazilian and American press. The US president said that trade tariffs applied to Brazil can be negotiated “very quickly”.
“I think we will be able to reach the very good agreements that we have been talking about, and I think we will end up having a very good relationship,” he added.
During the meeting it was agreed that a new meeting between representatives of the Brazilian and American governments should take place this Sunday night in Malaysia.
“Trump declared that he will instruct his team to begin a bilateral negotiation process, which should begin today – as everything is supposed to be resolved in a short time,” said Vieira.
It was the third time that Trump and Lula had a direct conversation. The first time was during the last UN General Assembly, held in September, in New York.
On October 6, they both made a call, in which the Brazilian proposed to the American the meeting within the scope of the Asean Summit, which began this Sunday and ends on Tuesday (28).
