This Saturday (25), President Donald Trump announced that he will raise tariffs on Canadian products. The increase will be 10% on the amounts that Canada already pays for American products.
Trump explained the decision on his social network, stating that the reason was an anti-tariff advertisement broadcast in a Canadian province, with images and the voice of former president Ronald Reagan.
Before that, Trump had already requested the withdrawal of the ad, under threat of suspending trade negotiations with Canada. As the advertisement continued to be shown, he decided to increase the rates.
Canada already faced average tariffs of 35% on products exported to the US, with specific surcharges for strategic sectors. Imported wood pays an additional 10%, while cabinets, sinks and upholstered furniture reach 25%.
Trump also accused Canadian officials of trying to interfere with U.S. Supreme Court rulings on the legality of his tariffs. Despite the tense atmosphere, Mark Carney said he was ready to resume negotiations as soon as the Americans want.
