According to information from The War Zone The Swedish Defense Procurement Authority (FMV) has Saab awarded a contract worth around $276 million covering the period from 2025 to 2027.
In addition to the FMV Saab with the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defense Research Agency, GKN Aerospace and other unnamed industrial partners.
The new contract includes concept studies for manned and unmanned solutions in a system-of-systems approach, as well as the development of technologies and undisclosed demonstrators.
“This order marks the next step in our shared journey to deliver innovative solutions that meet the future operational needs of the Swedish Armed Forces and other customers,” said Lars TossmanHead of the Aviation Division Saab.
How TWZ emphasized, this statement confirms that Saab also intends to export any platforms resulting from this development work, which would help keep the program financially viable.
At this stage it is still unclear whether there is a final manned successor to the current one Gripen-Fighter aircraft of the Swedish Air Force or whether the ongoing studies will lead to a kind of “air combat ecosystem” consisting of different types of drones – manned and/or unmanned.
