The strategic partnership between Kyiv and Stockholm includes the transfer of fighter aircraft, training and defense technology cooperation

Sweden has agreed to sell more than a hundred modern fighter jets JAS 39 Gripen E to Ukraine, in a deal that marks a new chapter in military cooperation between the two countries.

This announcement was formalized through the signing of a statement of intent for cooperation in the defense sector by the Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Gripen E, developed by Saab, is the most advanced version of the Swedish multipurpose fighter jet. This model combines high maneuverability, low operational costs and high combat efficiency. The jet is designed to operate on short runways and in difficult conditions — features that are invaluable to Ukrainian operations.

The aircraft is equipped with more powerful engines, modern AESA radar, advanced avionics systems, as well as improved weapons control systems. The Gripen E is also capable of carrying Meteor long-range missiles which can attack targets beyond visual range, as well as IRIS-T missiles for close combat.

According to military sources, the implementation of this project will significantly strengthen the Ukrainian Air Force, accelerate the modernization of their air capabilities, and increase interoperability with Western allies.

In 2023, it was revealed that Ukrainian pilots had tested JAS 39 Gripen jets in Sweden. Sweden’s Defense Minister at the time, Paul Johnson, stated that the pilots also underwent training using advanced simulators, which would help in decision-making regarding Ukraine’s future air defense.

Meanwhile, the Swedish Armed Forces have just received the first of a total of 60 Gripen E jets ordered in 2013 — delivery is due in October 2025.
