STF votes to resume the Beverage Production Control System from this Friday (17)

by Marcelo Moreira

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) will judge, starting this Friday (17), the action that discusses the resumption of a system created to monitor the manufacture of beverages.

The dispute involves the use of the Beverage Production Control System (Sicobe), created in 2008. The mechanism monitored, in real time, the production volume of beer, soft drinks and bottled water, to prevent tax fraud and ensure tax collection.

The system was deactivated in 2016, due to actions by the Federal Revenue Service, which considered that it had more costs than benefits, in addition to technical problems.

The government points out that the resumption of the system would, in practice, result in the granting of a tax benefit of R$1.8 billion per year, with no provision in the budget.
