The Senate Human Rights Commission approved a project that prohibits legal abortion after the 22nd week of pregnancy, even in cases permitted by Brazilian law.
The text was written by senator Mecias de Jesus, from the Republicans of Roraima. The rapporteur, senator Eduardo Girão, from Novo do Ceará, presented a favorable opinion and maintained the main content of the proposal. The vote took place symbolically and had the support of the committee president, senator Damares Alves, from the Federal District Republicans.
The measure provides that, after the 22nd week, the interruption of pregnancy can only occur by bringing forward the birth. The text also determines that, in situations of serious risk for the pregnant woman, medical teams must make every effort to preserve the life of the woman and the fetus.
The project amends the Civil Code and guarantees the unborn child the inviolable right to a healthy and harmonious birth.
Once approved by the Human Rights Commission, the proposal goes to the Social Affairs Commission and then to the Constitution and Justice Commission. Only after these steps can the text be evaluated by the Senate plenary.
