The Federal Police (PF) stated that it may suspend the issuance of passports from November 3rd due to a lack of resources in its budget to fund the activity. The organization is asking for a contribution of R$97.5 million from the government to avoid interruption of service.
In a letter sent by general director Andrei Rodrigues, the PF said it has been warning the government about the lack of funds since April. The agency informed that “there will be no alternative other than to stop the issuance and delivery of documents next month”. The service has already been suspended in 2022, during the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
The PF has already allocated 95% of the R$329.40 million available in the budget, around R$314.20 million, to pay for the issuance of passports and control air traffic. In a statement, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security stated that “it is acting in an active and coordinated manner” and that it maintains constant dialogue with the government’s economic team.
Due to the lack of resources, the PF will not be able to fulfill the payment of the contract with the Casa da Moeda for issuing passports and other services, such as outsourced control at borders and airports, foreigner registrations and maintenance of international traffic systems.
