The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, said this Wednesday (15) that he will not participate in the Summit of the Americas, which will be held in the Dominican Republic in December, after the host country decided not to invite the dictatorships of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela to the event in Punta Cana.
“I will not participate in the Summit of the Americas in the Dominican Republic. Dialogue does not begin with exclusions”, wrote the leftist leader in X.
In the post, Petro said that he proposed to the United States a meeting between the countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and Washington “to study the economic integration of a greater America”.
“There was no response, and what we have is aggression in the Caribbean, which had been established as a zone of peace,” he said, in reference to the bombings that the Trump administration has carried out against boats in the Caribbean Sea, alleging that they transport drugs belonging to Venezuelan gangs.
At the end of September, the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned that Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela are not part of the Organization of American States (OAS), which coordinates the event, and did not participate in the previous Summit of the Americas, held in Los Angeles in 2022 – the United States decided not to invite them due to repression in those places.
Even so, the ministry claimed that the decision not to invite the three dictatorships was taken with the sole objective of ensuring the participation of as many countries as possible in the summit.
