Norway will send F-35 fighters to Poland in a new NATO air policing mission from October.
Norwegian riders will be ready to intercept and, if necessary, deduct drones and Russian aircraft that violate Polish airspace, upon authorization from the Alliance Command. The goal is to reinforce the defense of NATO’s east flank amid increasing tensions with Moscow.

According to Norway Deputy Defense Minister Andreas Flåm, the mission is defensive and aims to protect the ally territory from possible air threats. He stressed that Europe’s Supreme Command will decide the appropriate measures in each case, with different resources to avoid provocations. Flåm also pointed out that the military presence of member countries in the border region with Russia was significantly expanded.
This will be the second mission of the F-35 Norwegians in Poland this year. The first occurred between January and the European summer, being later assumed by the Netherlands, who also sent F-35 fighters to support the transport of weapons to Ukraine and patrol the NATO’s airspace. During this operation, a Dutch F-35 even slaughtered a Russian drone that violated Polish territory, an unprecedented feat for the country.
