Machado is the founder of the Súmate movement, created more than 20 years ago to monitor elections and promote free voting in the country. She became a symbol of resistance to Nicolás Maduro’s regime, facing persecution, blocked candidacy and threats to her own life — but, even so, she decided to remain in Venezuela.
