A Ukrainian electronic warfare expert has reported sighting new Russian drones with a ring-shaped wing structure flying over Ukrainian territory.

In a public statement, Serhiy Beskrestnov said Russian forces have begun using ring-winged drones during operations targeting Ukrainian military assets.

According to him, these drones have recently been observed operating in Ukrainian airspace and appear to be designed for both reconnaissance/interception and ground attack tasks.

According to the Defence Blogthe design would incorporate an aerodynamic ring configuration surrounding the structure of an FPV drone.

This configuration, known in aerospace engineering as a closed wing or annular wing, can improve lift characteristics and reduce wingspan, improving portability and potentially extending range.

It is not yet clear how far along the deployment of these new drones is or how effective they have proven to be in operational conditions. Ukrainian authorities have not made any official statements on the operational performance of the system.

Although the exact type and manufacturer of these drones are not yet confirmed, similar designs of ring-winged drones have already been publicized by Russian state media.

Models seen in previous promotional materials include the drone series Cometattributed to a company called Shag vpered (Step Forward), located in Yelets district, Lipetsk region, Russia.
