Minor is identified after breaking into residential building

by Marcelo Moreira

A minor member of a criminal group specialized in theft from residences in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro was identified after a new robbery in a residential building. The recognition took place after the resident of the stolen apartment returned from a trip and discovered the invasion and the young man’s actions.

The victim went to the police station and provided internal images of the building, which made it possible to recognize the offender, who already has a history of involvement with the crime, as well as members of his family (brother and father). The group, coming from São Paulo, also has a history in other capitals, such as Paraná and Florianópolis.

According to the investigation, the crime occurred opportunistically, without a previously defined target. There were unsuccessful attempts to break into other buildings in Leblon, where doormen prevented entry, but in this case, the criminal managed to enter. The family focuses on stealing jewelry and luxury handbags, avoiding electronic devices to avoid being tracked.

The resident of the apartment reported a loss of R$650,000, an amount that corresponded to goods with an invoice (mainly his wife’s jewelry), but the total value of the theft is estimated at more than R$2 million, with the apartment having been “cleaned up”. Only the victim’s residence was invaded.

Although the criminal has been identified, the case is ongoing in court with the appropriate precautionary requests and further details were not disclosed due to the involvement of a minor in the case. The São Paulo police assist in investigations, as they have experience with this type of crime.
