The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, ended this Friday (24) the campaign of his party, Freedom Advances, for the legislative elections next Sunday (26) with an appeal to “defeat” communism and change the composition of Congress, paving the way for it to carry out crucial reforms in economic matters.
“We are the best government in history. But we must understand that it is impossible in 20 months to reverse 100 years of decadence. Therefore, this Sunday we have to defend the entire path we have taken,” said Milei at a political event in Rosario, the third most populous city in Argentina.
Surrounded by several candidates and a good part of his council of ministers, Milei defended his economic program of drastic fiscal adjustment, which according to him managed to restore the balance of public accounts, slow down high inflation to the interannual level of 30% and lift “12 million Argentines out of poverty”.
“Almost two years ago, when it was up to us to take over, I committed to you that, even if I was tough, I would tackle the problems at the root, and that’s why I did it with my back to Congress, because it was necessary to make a 180-degree turnaround and we did that,” said Milei, whose party is currently a minority in both chambers of Congress.
The president emphasized that the political opposition blocked the application of his measures, which aimed to improve the country’s situation. According to Milei, “when the economy was at full steam”, the opposition put “the impediment machine into motion” by approving laws contrary to its goal of maintaining fiscal balance.
“Despite a destitute Congress, which constantly attacked the government’s program, today we reached the elections on our feet and, starting Sunday, Argentina will truly change,” he declared.
“That’s why it’s so important to vote this Sunday, because we have the possibility of changing the face of Congress and being able to move forward with the reforms that Argentina needs”, added Milei, who promised to promote, once the change in Parliament takes place next December, reforms in labor and tax matters.
He highlighted that this Sunday’s elections are important to “defeat communism” and define whether Argentina is moving “towards the ideas of freedom or towards Castro-Chavista ideas”.
Around 35.9 million people are eligible to vote this Sunday to renew a third of the Senate and half of the Chamber of Deputies. The latest research indicates a scenario of high polarization between A Liberdade Avança and the Peronist front Força Pátria.
The polls are not unanimous regarding which of the two forces will receive the most votes this Sunday.
