President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) signed an article that was published in at least nine newspapers abroad, on Monday (13), in which he argues that hunger is a “political choice”.
The text was released during an official trip by the PT member to Italy, where he is participating in the World Food Forum, promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
In the article, Lula says that hunger is not a natural condition of humanity, in fact, “it is the result of choices made by governments and economic systems that chose to turn a blind eye to inequality.”
The publication, published in different European newspapers, questions that, while the “economic order” denies 673 million people access to adequate food, “it allows a select group of three thousand billionaires to hold 14.6% of global GDP”.
The text signed by Lula also criticizes the richest nations for promoting high military spending recorded in 2024. “The richest nations drove the biggest increase in military spending since the Cold War, which reached US$2.7 trillion annually.” In contrast, according to the Brazilian president, these same countries did not commit to investing 0.7% of GDP in concrete actions to promote the development of poor countries.
As a solution to solve the problem of hunger in the world, Lula defended the reform of global governance mechanisms. “We need to strengthen multilateralism, create investment flows that promote sustainable development and guarantee States the capacity to implement consistent public policies to combat hunger and poverty.”
Furthermore, the PT member once again defended the “taxation of the super-rich”, adding that a substantial change in tax rules is “in the process of being approved in the Brazilian Congress”.
The article was published in at least nine international newspapers, with emphasis on countries such as Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom, France and Argentina.
