Italy has announced a new military modernization plan for 2025-2027 aimed at strengthening defense capabilities and increasing investment in technology and strategic readiness.

The Multiannual Defense Program Document (DPP)published by the Ministry of Defense, confirms the target of allocating 2% of GDP to defense and maintains programs such as the F-35, the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), while introducing new procurements including six maritime multi-role aircraft (M3A) and new armed drones.

The new strategy reiterates the focus on the so-called “Wider Mediterranean,” which includes North Africa, the Middle East and the Sahel region, which is considered unstable due to conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and the Red Sea. The document also highlights the growing role of the Indo-Pacific and the Arctic in Euro-Atlantic security, requiring Italy to develop new air and sea capabilities for long-term surveillance and deterrence.

Key investments include the Army’s development of a new tank and long-range artillery systems, while the Navy will bolster its fleet with new M3A aircraft and FREMM EVO frigates. The Air Force will expand its fleet of F-35 and Typhoon fighter jets and invest in electronic warfare aircraft and attack drones.

The package consolidates the modernization of Italy’s armed forces and positions the country as one of the most important NATO defense hubs in the region.
