Italy has announced a new military modernization plan for the 2025-2027 period, aiming to strengthen its defense capabilities and increase investments in technology and strategic readiness.

The Multi-Year Defense Program Document (DPP)released by the Ministry of Defense, confirms the goal of allocating 2% of GDP to defense, maintaining programs such as the F-35, Eurofighter Typhoon, and Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), while introducing new acquisitions like six maritime multi-role aircraft (M3A) and new armed drones.

The new strategy reaffirms the focus on the so-called “Extended Mediterranean,” a region including North Africa, the Middle East, and the Sahel, considered unstable due to conflicts such as those in Ukraine, Gaza, and the Red Sea. The document also highlights the growing role of the Indo-Pacific and the Arctic in Euro-Atlantic security, requiring Italy to develop new air and naval capabilities for long-range surveillance and deterrence.

Key investments include the Army developing a new tank and long-range artillery systems, while the Navy will strengthen its fleet with new M3A aircraft and FREMM EVO frigates. The Air Force will expand its fleet of F-35 and Typhoon fighters, as well as invest in electronic warfare aircraft and attack drones.

The package consolidates the modernization of the Italian Armed Forces and positions the country as one of NATO’s main defense hubs in the region.
