Published on Instagram on October 19 of this year, the post has the following caption superimposed on the images: “American troops land in Venezuela.” The video shows soldiers disembarking from a ship on a beach, carrying weapons and backpacks. The scene is accompanied by a narration in Spanish that says: “Exclusive images of the military mobilization of American troops in Puerto Rico, specifically in the Arroyo region.” The misleading post therefore uses images of Puerto Rico as if they were from Venezuela. On October 15, American President Donald Trump admitted to having authorized Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operations in Venezuela and said he was studying ground attacks against drug cartels. He said he made the decision because the country has been sending drugs and criminals to the United States. According to a report by the North American newspaper “The Washington Post” published this Wednesday (22), the Republican is preparing an escalation of actions on the coast of Venezuela that could lead to the fall of the Nicolás Maduro regime. ⚠️ Why is the video fake? Although the video is real — and not an artificial intelligence production — the images were taken out of context. In fact, the scene was recorded in Puerto Rico, in the Arroyo region, on October 16 of this year (see image below). According to the American newspaper New York Times, around 10,000 American soldiers are in the Caribbean region, sent during the escalation of tensions between the United States and Venezuela. The original post was shared on Instagram by Telemundo 51, the Spanish-language TV station of the Telemundo network, based in Florida, USA, on the same date. To find the origin of the content, Fato ou Fake used the InVID tool to fragment the material into several frames (static images). Then, he selected one of these “photos” and did a reverse search on Google Lens. This research serves to verify what content had previously been reproduced by reliable sources – and in what context. The search identified the broadcaster’s publication on Instagram.
