“I work with the optimism that we can find a solution” says Lula about conversation with Trump

by Marcelo Moreira

This Saturday (25), on the eve of the first face-to-face meeting between Lula and Trump, the Brazilian president said he was “optimistic” about the possibility of reaching an agreement on the 50% tariff imposed by the American.

Asked about the subject, Lula stated that everything “depends on the conversation” and that he is working to “find a solution” to the tariffs imposed on Brazil:

“It all depends on the conversation. I work with the optimism that we can find a solution”

The president highlighted that there are no prior demands from either side and that the objective of the meeting is to “put the problems on the table” and seek consensus alternatives.

The government is betting on diplomacy and the resumption of bilateral dialogue as a way to reduce trade barriers and protect Brazilian exporters affected by the new tariffs.

Both presidents are in Malaysia to participate in the 47th Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in the city of Kuala Lumpur. The occasion made possible the first face-to-face summit between the leaders.

The first time that Lula and Trump saw each other in person was in a meeting that lasted a short time, at the UN General Assembly, in New York, on September 23rd. Furthermore, the two already spoke by phone on October 6th.
