Guilherme Boulos takes office as minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency

by Marcelo Moreira

Federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP) assumed command of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic this Wednesday (29), in a ceremony at Palácio do Planalto. The department is responsible for articulating the government’s relationship with social movements and civil society organizations.

During his inauguration speech, Boulos stated that his priority will be to take the government’s political project “to the streets” and strengthen popular participation in Executive decisions. He also asked for a minute of silence for the victims of the police operation carried out on Tuesday (28) in the Alemão and Penha complexes, in Rio de Janeiro, which left at least 121 people dead, according to the state government.

The new minister replaces Márcio Macêdo (PT-SE), who held the position since the beginning of President Lula’s third term, in January 2023. The replacement was made official on October 20th and is part of the 13th ministerial change promoted by Lula since then — the seventh only in 2025.

Amid speculation about a possible candidacy in the 2026 municipal elections, Boulos stated that he does not intend to run for elected office in the next election. According to him, the focus now is to contribute to the implementation of federal government policies and “bring the State closer to the population”.
