Greece plans to ask for it From the United States of America the AH-64D Apache the delivery of some of the combat helicopters that the US Army will decommission by 2026. In total, about 100 units will be withdrawn from the active stock, and Athens plans to take delivery of up to 30 helicopters, in two shipments of 15 aircraft each.

The Greek Kathimerini according to the daily, although the official request has not yet been submitted to the US Defense Cooperation Office in Athens, preliminary discussions have already taken place between the two countries — and the American side has reportedly confirmed the availability of the helicopters.

Transfer through the EDA program

If the deal moves forward, the transfer will be through the Excess Defense Articles (EDA) program, which allows US allies to receive surplus military equipment for free — just by paying shipping and refurbishing costs.

Athens’ interest reflects the critical state of its current Apache fleet. Of the 28 helicopters in service (19 AH-64A and 9 AH-64D) according to military sources, only one is fully deployable. The shortage of spare parts was exacerbated by a fire at the Stefanovikio Air Base, one of the most important maintenance centers for the Greek military.

More American equipment is also in the crosshairs

In addition to the helicopters, Greece is also considering acquiring armored vehicles and other redundant systems from the US arsenal. Negotiations are expected to accelerate after the new US ambassador, Kimberly Guilfoyle will arrive in Athens at the end of October.

The acquisition of the modernized Apache helicopters would significantly boost the Hellenic Army’s attack and reconnaissance capabilities at a time when the Greek armed forces are undergoing a comprehensive modernization, including the acquisition of new fighter jets, frigates and air defense systems.
