Germany received its first P-8A Poseidon sea patrol plane, produced by Boeing, at a ceremony held in Seattle, United States.
The aircraft is the first of eight units ordered and will replace the old P-3C Orion, reinforcing the capacity for surveillance, recognition and multi-tuition operations of the German Navy.

The initial contract, signed in 2021, provided for five planes, but in 2023 Berlin approved the purchase of three more units with resources from a special defense fund. The P-8A has modern, long range sensors-which can be expanded by flight refueling-and real-time data systems, allowing NATO’s operations integration and immediate sharing of strategic information.
With this acquisition, Germany will operate the same platform used by countries such as the United States, Australia, India and Norway.
The reinforcement comes at a moment of greater concern for maritime safety in the North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea, consolidating the role of the country in strengthening surveillance and the dissuasion of the military alliance in the region.
