Germany has begun a broad program to modernize its land forces with the order of 274 new Luchs 2 reconnaissance vehicles, which will replace the current Fennek models.
The contract was signed between the Office of Acquisition of German Armed Forces (BAAINBw) ea General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS)after approval of the budget by the Bundestag. The first vehicles are expected to be delivered in 2029, with a total investment of 3.5 billion euros, including training simulators and logistical support.

Luchs 2 will be built on the 6×6 Piranha platform and will feature state-of-the-art sensors, as well as advanced communication and data processing systems, to improve surveillance and command capabilities in the field. The project also provides for the option to purchase an additional 82 units, if the German Army decides to expand the fleet in the future.
While the package includes weapon system development, the 25mm automatic cannons will be purchased separately through an agreement with the Rheinmetallwhich will be able to supply up to 310 units of the KBA model. These weapons will be installed in unmanned turrets developed by Valhalla Turrets of Slovenia and produced by Rheinmetall Electronics in Bremen. At the same time, the engine manufacturer DEUTZ announced a partnership with ARX Roboticsaimed at integrating land-based drone technologies into the future of German defense.
