End of mandatory driving schools should come into effect from this year onwards, says government

by Marcelo Moreira

The Minister of Transport, Renan Filho, stated that the end of the obligation for driving schools to obtain a National Driving License (CNH) should come into effect later this year.

The agenda is being discussed in Brasília and, at this moment, the population can participate through a public consultation opened by the Ministry of Transport that runs until Sunday (2). The idea is that the candidate can choose how to prepare for the theoretical and practical exams, which will remain mandatory for issuing the driver’s license. The student may hire independent instructors accredited by the local transit agency.

Currently, it is mandatory to complete a 45-hour workload at a driving school. With the end of the obligation, there will be a reduction of up to 80% in the cost of the entire process and simplification of the steps. The test will continue to be required and the government will offer free preparatory courses for the practical test. There must also be a standardization of tests applied by Detrans across the country.
