The Lula government released a press release commenting on the peace agreement between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas. The Itamaraty text makes a nod and recognizes the United States’ leading role in the negotiations, which could bring an end to the two-year war.
“The Brazilian government welcomes the announcement of an agreement between Israel and Hamas (…) It recognizes, in this context, the important role played by the United States and values the actions of the other mediating countries: Qatar, Egypt and Turkey”, says the text.

Brazil also highlighted the humanitarian dimension of the agreement and stated that the ceasefire must represent effective relief for the civilian population. The government also reiterated the need to guarantee full, safe and immediate access for humanitarian assistance and UN teams working in the region.
In the note, the country urged the parties to fully comply with what was agreed and to engage “in good faith” in negotiations to enable the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces, the beginning of the reconstruction process in Gaza — under Palestinian coordination and supervision — and the restoration of the political-geographical unity of Palestine under its legitimate government.
Finally, Brazil reaffirmed its historic position in defense of the two-state solutionwith an independent and viable State of Palestine, living side by side with Israel “in peace and security, within the 1967 borders, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital”.
