Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), was discharged from the Sírio-Libanês hospital, in Brasília, after feeling ill and being admitted on Wednesday night (15). Barroso had a drop in blood pressure and complained of pain when he was in court.
He spent the night “under observation” because of an illness. The minister’s relationship with the STF runs until this Friday (17) and his retirement was published in an extra edition of the Official Gazette of the Union, scheduled to begin this Saturday (18).
Barroso, who could remain in office until 2033, decided to advance his withdrawal amid recent sanctions by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, against members of the judiciary and after completing his term as President of the Supreme Court.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will only be able to appoint a replacement when Barroso leaves office. Among the main candidates to take on the position are the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) and the minister of the Union’s Court of Auditors Bruno Dantas.
