Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had confirmed this Monday that he would go to the meeting, but minutes later his office said that he would no longer go, and gave the reason for its proximity to a Jewish holiday. Before the summit, Trump said that “the era of terror” in the Middle East is over in a speech to the Israeli Parliament. The American president was applauded by those present. Netanyahu, in a speech before Trump, said he was committed to peace. What has happened so far: There were 48 hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Of these, 20 were released alive. Israel says the remaining 28 hostages are dead, but the status of two of them is still officially unknown. In total, Hamas kidnapped 251 people in the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack. Other hostages were released under other ceasefire agreements. In return, the Israeli government began releasing around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including 250 who had been sentenced to life in prison for crimes committed against Israel and its population. The group asked for more time to locate all the bodies of the dead hostages. There is still no deadline for all the bodies to be returned.
