Last Tuesday (14), a man who was hospitalized in Jundiaí, in the interior of São Paulo, for having ingested methanol, died. The death was confirmed by the city hall.
He was 37 years old and had been admitted to the Hospital de Caridade São Vicente de Paulo since October 3rd. The Campinas Toxicological Information and Assistance Center confirmed methanol poisoning in the patient.
In a statement, Jundiaí City Hall reported that, to date, seven cases of exogenous intoxication have been reported following the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the city. Of these, six were ruled out for methanol poisoning, while one confirmed case resulted in death.
In total, around 36 people in Brazil were poisoned by the chemical. 156 cases are under analysis and 362 are suspected. There are still 11 deaths under investigation.
